NPS, ICRC commission Sally port at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison 

The Nigerian Prison Service in collaboration with the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday commissioned a Sally port at the Medium Security Prison Kirikiri in Lagos.
The Controller General (CG) Alhaji Ja,afaru Ahmed during the commissioning said that support and close relationship between the ICRC and NPS has resulted in the acomplishement of projects in the prison facilities.
Ahmed said that sally gate which is also known as the service gate was constructed strategically to serve as an access delivery to ration, wood, bedding and other supplies to the prison yard as against the practice in the past.
“You are aware that for decades, any service such as sewage discharge and construction maintainance suffered immense challenge due to height of the gate lodge at MSP Kirikiri to accommodate incoming trucks.
“This inadequacy easily aid and abate trafficking as materials are hauled manually in piecemeal into or out of the yard,” Ahmed said.
According to the CG, construction of sally port in the prison would enhance security and best service practices in the prison as well as to serve as a contingency plan in case of emergencies for ambulances, fire trucks and sewage evacuation route.
“It is appreciated to underscore the intervention gesture of ICRC, let me state here that the administration of President Muhammad Buhari has been kind to NPS in our recent history. The funding has been phenomenal,” he said.
The CG was ably represented by the Deputy Controller of Prison Charles Ahaotu in-charge of works and logistics NPS HQ, Abuja.
During the commissioning Mr Muneer Taher, water and Habitat Delegate for Detention, ICRC said that the service would alleviate the condition of inmates and commended the NPS on their partnership and opportunity given to them till the completion of the project.
Taher who was also the leader of the delegation commended the NPS under the able leadership of the CG and urged officers to maintain the facilities for effective use.
“It is difficult before we can get approval from the NPS and Geneva but we are grateful to all the officer who supported us during the construction period. We are looking forward to do more as time permits us.,” Taher said.
Lagos state Controller of Prison, Tunde Ladipo salute the courage and continued support of the ICRC and urged them to continue the good relationship for an improved NPS in the overall service of humanity.
Tunde Ladipo was represented by the acting Assistant Controller in-charge of zone A, CP Olugbenga Babalola.
Assistant Controller of Prison, ACP Raymond Jatau, said that sally Port are important important infrastructures in the prison that serve as emergency exit and entrance for big truck meant for disposal of waste or bringing in ration for inmates.
Jatau commended, Red Cross society and the Controller General of Nigeria Prison Alhaji Ja, afaru Ahmed for his approval of the Sallyport as part of his mandate to reposition the NPS.
He said that siting the sally port at the medium Prison in kirikiri was a welcome idea being among the oldest prisons in the country.
DCP in-charge, Medium Security Kirikiri, Ben Rabah Freedman said that construction of sally port was a good gesture to enhance passage of ration and evacuation of waste.
Freedman call on spirited Individuals and NGO’s to assist the NPS in providing  basic amenities for management of inmates as prison is   now become correction center.
Also at the event was Captain Adedokun Siyanbade who represented the Commander, NNS WEY, Nigeria Navy town Pho.
Siyanbade, said the idea was a good initiative and others should emulate the gesture to enhance logistics and emergency.
